Hello From Mosaic’s Gap Year Crew!

Meet the Mosaic Gap Year Crew!

Hello Friend,

We wanted to introduce ourselves as the new Gap Year Crew (GYC) for Mosaic! The GYC is a group of five high-school graduates who have committed our year to learn through Mosaic while we engage in our own personal development and expand our understanding of non-profit organizations. None of us could have expected a year quite like this one; however we are grateful that this moment has allowed us the opportunity to reconnect with Mosaic in an incredibly meaningful way.

The Gap Year Crew

Even though we are extremely disappointed that we were unable to return as Cabin Leaders this year, we are only three weeks into our Gap program with Mosaic and have already immersed ourselves in every aspect of this amazing organization and had fun doing so. For most of us, our only exposure to Mosaic had been through the magic of the Outdoor Project. We did not realize how much goes on throughout the year and let us just tell you — it’s a lot. From the In-School Project on Zoom, to Mosaic’s consulting contracts, to sharing Mosaic lessons through virtual content, the impact and work that Mosaic does outside of the Outdoor Project are incredible.

Our GYC group meets on our beautiful new Castro Valley land, the site of Mosaic’s future permanent home. We participate in skill-building workshops in land stewardship, stress management, budgeting, outdoor cooking, and teaching/facilitation training, to name a few. Individually, we are paired with a mentor on Mosaic’s staff to work on a variety of projects:

Ysabel

Ysabel is honing her facilitation skills as she assists with online classroom workshops about stereotyping, discrimination, empathy, conflict resolution and more, with the fourth and fifth graders who would have attended the Outdoor Project this fall.

Nils

Nils is exploring various forms of virtual engagement through the creation of videos and online activities, such as an elaborate virtual escape room for our Youth Leader Fam Friday event that was a blast!

Al Staples

Al is pursuing music and performance bringing energy and magic to our Mosaic songs in our Zoom classroom visits.

Zo

Zo is discovering various nonprofit writing and design processes including grant applications, social media content development, and fundraising campaigns.

Hector

Hector is learning about sustainable land and water management and has been involved in testing and monitoring our new wells on our Castro Valley property.

We would like to thank you for your ongoing support of Mosaic’s essential work. We would love for you to keep Mosaic in mind as you consider your year-end giving. We hope that you can feel the energy pushing for positive change right now. Something that we have talked a lot about in our leadership work is the importance of hope and community, both of which have been hard to find during this pandemic. Mosaic is providing the Gap Year Crew with both hope and community right now, and we want to share them with you!

It is abundantly clear that we not only need Mosaic’s teachings in this tumultuous year, but that the work to build a more just and peaceful world is an effort that must be sustained for years to come.

We thank you for being a part of Mosaic’s community.
