The Mosaic Project

The Mosaic Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, unites children of diverse backgrounds, teaches them essential community-building skills, and empowers them to become peacemakers. Since 2000, we have reached thousands of children through our immersive experiential education programs in equity, empathy, and effective communication across differences. This brief video highlighting our primary program, the Outdoor School, captures the spirit of our work.

Nearly 20 years in the making, our second album features songs written and sung around the campfire by Mosaic staff and students throughout our history. It is a mosaic of music, comprised of 14 tracks of different genres and styles that embrace the challenges and joys of peacebuilding.

This song was written to accompany the story of Little Red Riding Hood from the “Big Bad” Wolf’s point of view.

Lyrics

PRE-CHORUS
I’m “the Big Bad Wolf” they say,
“Why did you scare that girl away?”

You don’t even know me
So why you trying to tell me?
I tried and I tried
Misunderstandings really get to me

Take another deep breath
Calm the storm within your chest
When they go low you know the rest

CHORUS:
It’s times like this,
I ain’t acting like I know I should
You got me labeled, “Big Bad Wolf”
And now you got me howling at the moon.

V1:
You don’t know me
You only know the rumors
my -reputation proceeds me,
So, as soon as you meet me
You jump to conclusion
Why?

‘Cause I’m a “bad man?”
I did what I had to do
can I – get a little empathy?
Put ya ten toes inside my shoes
And move like I – mean,
take walk with me,
try to see me
or who I am
not just the faults in me

You might identify,
Might even evolve with me
Love – you ever try to just talk to me?
Look,
I don’t bite
But let’s just keep it polite
The fact of the matter,
The bigger the badder
But sometimes just hype

PRE-CHORUS:
I’m “the Big Bad Wolf” they say,
“Why did you scare that girl away?”

You don’t even know me
So why you trying to tell me?
I tried and I tried
Misunderstandings really get to me

Take another deep breath
Calm the storm within your chest
When they go low you know the rest

CHORUS:
It’s times like this,
I ain’t acting like I know I should
You got me labeled, “Big Bad Wolf”
And now you got me howling at the moon.

CHORUS:
It’s times like this,
I ain’t acting like I know I should
You got me labeled, “Big Bad Wolf”
And now you got me howling at the moon.

BRIDGE:
I’ve been labeled something I’m not
I’ve been prejudged and it hurts me a lot

Now you don’t see me like I am just lost
I just need time to work out all these thoughts

Now you don’t see me like I am just lost
I just need time to work out all these thoughts

Yea hella mad but more than that
Feel like I never got a chance
And that’s just sad

PRE-CHORUS:
I’m “the Big Bad Wolf” they say,
“Why did you scare that girl away?”

You don’t even know me
So why you trying to tell me?
I tried and I tried
Misunderstandings really get to me

Take another deep breath
Calm the storm within your chest
When they go low you know the rest

CHORUS:
It’s times like this,
I ain’t acting like I know I should
You got me labeled, “Big Bad Wolf”
And now you got me howling at the moon.

CHORUS:

The three Peace Blockers are:
1. Blame
2. Guilt
3. Defensiveness

Lyrics

V1:
There are three feelings
That block us from peace.
Preventing empathy,
Stopping us from connecting.

You might feel guilty
“I’m such a bad person,”
“I’m always hurting everyone else.”

CHORUS:
These are peace blockers
Stopping us from being ourselves
These are peace blockers
They hurt and they never help.

V2:
You might be defensive
“I didn’t do wrong here.”
Ignoring their thoughts
And their perspective.

You can blame someone
“Well it’s all your fault,”
“You did this to me.”
Giving away all your power.

CHORUS:
These are peace blockers
Stopping us from being ourselves
These are peace blockers
They hurt and they never help

These are peace blockers
Stopping us from being ourselves
These are peace blockers
They hurt and they never help

BRIDGE:
This can happen to anyone
Check n with yourself
Take a deep breath
“Am I feeling guilty, blaming, or defensive?”

CHORUS:
These are peace blockers
Stopping us from being ourselves
These are peace blockers
They hurt and they never help

These are peace blockers
Stopping us from being ourselves
These are peace blockers
They hurt and they never help

These are peace blockers
Stopping us from being ourselves
These are peace blockers
They hurt and they never help

The three Keys to Peace are:
1. Listening
2. Empathy (See Volume 1)
3. Assertiveness

Lyrics

CHORUS:
Are you listening?
With your eyes
And your ears

Make sure you’re listening
With you heart
And your feelings

I know your listening
When you can repeat it
Listen up!
‘Cause peace ain’t easy

BRIDGE:
I could use your help
I don’t think can do this by myself

V1:
I got something important to tell you
Gather around
I’d rather not shout it

Come in closer
And show me you hear me
Snap if you feel me
Clap if you with me

I know distractions can happen
Find your way back in
Ask your self

CHORUS:
Are you listening?
With your eyes
And your ears

Make sure you’re listening
With you heart
And your feelings

I know your listening
When you can repeat it

Listen up?
‘Cause peace ain’t easy

CHORUS:
Are you listening?
With your eyes
And your ears

Make sure you’re listening
With you heart
and your feelings

I know your listening
When you can repeat it

Listen up!
‘Cause peace ain’t easy

BRIDGE:
I could use your help
I don’t think can do this by myself

V2:
Yo, can I get a word from the wise?
To combat the rhythm
The myth
The lies

It’s like,
Talking to a crowd
Who can really hear you?

Surrounded by people
Do they really care?

How will I know?
Unless you’re willing to show

Open your heart and mind
And let your words flow

I will listen to you
And you will listen to me

Just by listening
We will spread peace

CHORUS:
Are you listening?
With your eyes
and your ears

Make sure you’re listening
With you heart
and your feelings

I know your listening
When you can repeat it

Listen up
‘Cause peace ain’t easy

CHORUS:
Are you listening?
With your eyes
And your ears

Make sure you’re listening
With you heart
And your feelings

I know your listening
When you can repeat it

Listen up?
‘Cause peace ain’t easy

3. Assertiveness

Lyrics

V1:
When you’re passive
You shrink back
And use a weak voice.

When you’re aggressive
You spread poison
And try to force a choice.

Assertive is the answer
It’s strong without being mean.
Stop the poison,
Spread peace.
Come on, let’s sing!

PRE-CHORUS:
It’s your body language,
What you say
And how you say it. (3X)

‘Cause your SUPERPOWER
Is assertiveness!

CHORUS:
Calm, cool, collected, confident and clear.
You gotta be calm, cool, collected confident
And clear.

V2:
It’s okay to say, “No,”
To a hurt person or a friend

And allies who can empathize
Are sure to lend a hand.

Do what you gotta do
As many times as it takes.

Respect.
Connect.
Protect your space!

PRE-CHORUS:
It’s your body language,
What you say
And how you say it. (3X)

‘Cause your SUPERPOWER

Lyrics

CHORUS: (x4)
Fighting is not the solution.
Try conflict resolution.

V1:
Stop,
Cool off,
And take a deep breath.

When you get angry,
Don’t lose your head.

Tell each other
The way you feel.

Step back
And chill.

Don’t scream,
Don’t shout.

Use your words
To work it out.

CHORUS: (x4)
Fighting is not the solution.
Try conflict resolution.

V2:
Listen to each other.
Find out what you both need.

Stand in each other’s shoes.
Practice a little empathy.

Make a plan you both like
And go for it.

No problem ever gets solved
By fighting over it.

CHORUS: (x4)
Fighting is not the solution.
Try conflict resolution.

BRIDGE: (2x)
I’m going to use my I-Statements
I’m going to use it
I’m going to use it

V3:
I feel…
I feel so sad

When I…
When I’m singing all alone

Because I need…
Because I need community

And could you…
And could you sing with me?

BRIDGE:
I’m going to use my I-Statements
I’m going to use it
I’m going to use it

CHORUS: (x4)
Fighting is not the solution.
Try conflict resolution.

Oh, stand up!
Stand up for my brother
Oh, stand up!
Stand up for my sister
Oh, stand up!
Stand up for each other
Oh stand up!
Oh stand up!

Oh stand up!
Stand up to fight wars no more
Oh stand up!
Stand up whether rich or poor
Oh stand up!
Stand up for each other
Oh stand up!
Oh stand up!

Find a solution
Try conflict resolution (x4)

Got a story to tell
Didn’t go very well

Lyrics

CHORUS
Fighting for what’s right in the world around me,
Improving my community.

Stopping injustice that you and I see
That’s Mosaic in Action.

Stand up assertively!

V1
We’re interconnected,
so, we’re allies to our friends.
We use our empathy to understand them.
We assertively protest,
When we see something wrong.
We walk out
or sit in
or even write a song!

CHORUS
Fighting for what’s right in the world around me
Improving my community!

Stopping injustice that you and I see
That’s being a “Mosaic citizen” to me!

V2
What do you care about
and what are you going to do?

Raise your voice high and follow through
The government’s branches and leaders count on you
You have the tools
and the power to get them to listen to you!

BRIDGE
But it can be hard,
when I look around me
And hurt is what I see
Change isn’t easy
but together
We can see a world of equality!

CHORUS
Fighting for what’s right in the world around me
Improving my community

Stopping injustice that you and I see
That’s “Mosaic in Action” to me!

This song was written to accompany the story of Little Red Riding Hood from the “Big Bad” Wolf’s point of view.

Lyrics

PRE-CHORUS
I’m “the Big Bad Wolf” they say,
“Why did you scare that girl away?”

You don’t even know me
So why you trying to tell me?
I tried and I tried
Misunderstandings really get to me

Take another deep breath
Calm the storm within your chest
When they go low you know the rest

CHORUS:
It’s times like this,
I ain’t acting like I know I should
You got me labeled, “Big Bad Wolf”
And now you got me howling at the moon.

V1:
You don’t know me
You only know the rumors
my -reputation proceeds me,
So, as soon as you meet me
You jump to conclusion
Why?

‘Cause I’m a “bad man?”
I did what I had to do
can I – get a little empathy?
Put ya ten toes inside my shoes
And move like I – mean,
take walk with me,
try to see me
or who I am
not just the faults in me

You might identify,
Might even evolve with me
Love – you ever try to just talk to me?
Look,
I don’t bite
But let’s just keep it polite
The fact of the matter,
The bigger the badder
But sometimes just hype

PRE-CHORUS:
I’m “the Big Bad Wolf” they say,
“Why did you scare that girl away?”

You don’t even know me
So why you trying to tell me?
I tried and I tried
Misunderstandings really get to me

Take another deep breath
Calm the storm within your chest
When they go low you know the rest

CHORUS:
It’s times like this,
I ain’t acting like I know I should
You got me labeled, “Big Bad Wolf”
And now you got me howling at the moon.

CHORUS:
It’s times like this,
I ain’t acting like I know I should
You got me labeled, “Big Bad Wolf”
And now you got me howling at the moon.

BRIDGE:
I’ve been labeled something I’m not
I’ve been prejudged and it hurts me a lot

Now you don’t see me like I am just lost
I just need time to work out all these thoughts

Now you don’t see me like I am just lost
I just need time to work out all these thoughts

Yea hella mad but more than that
Feel like I never got a chance
And that’s just sad

PRE-CHORUS:
I’m “the Big Bad Wolf” they say,
“Why did you scare that girl away?”

You don’t even know me
So why you trying to tell me?
I tried and I tried
Misunderstandings really get to me

Take another deep breath
Calm the storm within your chest
When they go low you know the rest

CHORUS:
It’s times like this,
I ain’t acting like I know I should
You got me labeled, “Big Bad Wolf”
And now you got me howling at the moon.

CHORUS:

You got me labeled, “Big Bad Wolf”
And now you got me howling at the moon.

03. Peace Blockers

Choose a streaming platform to hear this song

The three Peace Blockers are:
1. Blame
2. Guilt
3. Defensiveness

Lyrics

V1:
There are three feelings
That block us from peace.
Preventing empathy,
Stopping us from connecting.

You might feel guilty
“I’m such a bad person,”
“I’m always hurting everyone else.”

CHORUS:
These are peace blockers
Stopping us from being ourselves
These are peace blockers
They hurt and they never help.

V2:
You might be defensive
“I didn’t do wrong here.”
Ignoring their thoughts
And their perspective.

You can blame someone
“Well it’s all your fault,”
“You did this to me.”
Giving away all your power.

CHORUS:
These are peace blockers
Stopping us from being ourselves
These are peace blockers
They hurt and they never help

These are peace blockers
Stopping us from being ourselves
These are peace blockers
They hurt and they never help

BRIDGE:
This can happen to anyone
Check n with yourself
Take a deep breath
“Am I feeling guilty, blaming, or defensive?”

CHORUS:
These are peace blockers
Stopping us from being ourselves
These are peace blockers
They hurt and they never help

These are peace blockers
Stopping us from being ourselves
These are peace blockers
They hurt and they never help

These are peace blockers
Stopping us from being ourselves
These are peace blockers
They hurt and they never help

04. Listening Song

Choose a streaming platform to hear this song
Apple Music Spotify Pandora Bandcamp YouTube Amazon Music

The three Keys to Peace are:
1. Listening
2. Empathy (See Volume 1)
3. Assertiveness

Lyrics

CHORUS:
Are you listening?
With your eyes
And your ears

Make sure you’re listening
With you heart
And your feelings

I know your listening
When you can repeat it
Listen up!
‘Cause peace ain’t easy

BRIDGE:
I could use your help
I don’t think can do this by myself

V1:
I got something important to tell you
Gather around
I’d rather not shout it

Come in closer
And show me you hear me
Snap if you feel me
Clap if you with me

I know distractions can happen
Find your way back in
Ask your self

CHORUS:
Are you listening?
With your eyes
And your ears

Make sure you’re listening
With you heart
And your feelings

I know your listening
When you can repeat it

Listen up?
‘Cause peace ain’t easy

CHORUS:
Are you listening?
With your eyes
And your ears

Make sure you’re listening
With you heart
and your feelings

I know your listening
When you can repeat it

Listen up!
‘Cause peace ain’t easy

BRIDGE:
I could use your help
I don’t think can do this by myself

V2:
Yo, can I get a word from the wise?
To combat the rhythm
The myth
The lies

It’s like,
Talking to a crowd
Who can really hear you?

Surrounded by people
Do they really care?

How will I know?
Unless you’re willing to show

Open your heart and mind
And let your words flow

I will listen to you
And you will listen to me

Just by listening
We will spread peace

CHORUS:
Are you listening?
With your eyes
and your ears

Make sure you’re listening
With you heart
and your feelings

I know your listening
When you can repeat it

Listen up
‘Cause peace ain’t easy

CHORUS:
Are you listening?
With your eyes
And your ears

Make sure you’re listening
With you heart
And your feelings

I know your listening
When you can repeat it

Listen up?
‘Cause peace ain’t easy

1. Listening
2. Empathy (see Volume 1)
3. Assertiveness

Lyrics

V1:
When you’re passive
You shrink back
And use a weak voice.

When you’re aggressive
You spread poison
And try to force a choice.

Assertive is the answer
It’s strong without being mean.
Stop the poison,
Spread peace.
Come on, let’s sing!

PRE-CHORUS:
It’s your body language,
What you say
And how you say it. (3X)

‘Cause your SUPERPOWER
Is assertiveness!

CHORUS:
Calm, cool, collected, confident and clear.
You gotta be calm, cool, collected confident
And clear.

V2:
It’s okay to say, “No,”
To a hurt person or a friend

And allies who can empathize
Are sure to lend a hand.

Do what you gotta do
As many times as it takes.

Respect.
Connect.
Protect your space!

PRE-CHORUS:
It’s your body language,
What you say
And how you say it. (3X)

‘Cause your SUPERPOWER
Is Assertiveness!

Calm, cool, collected, confident and clear.
You gotta be calm, cool, collected confident
And clear.

Calm, cool, collected, confident and clear.
You gotta be calm, cool, collected confident
And clear.

Lyrics

CHORUS: (x4)
Fighting is not the solution.
Try conflict resolution.

V1:
Stop,
Cool off,
And take a deep breath.

When you get angry,
Don’t lose your head.

Tell each other
The way you feel.

And chill.

Don’t shout.

Use your words
To work it out.

CHORUS: (x4)
Fighting is not the solution.
Try conflict resolution.

V2:
Listen to each other.
Find out what you both need.

Stand in each other’s shoes.
Practice a little empathy.

Make a plan you both like
And go for it.

No problem ever gets solved
By fighting over it.

CHORUS: (x4)
Fighting is not the solution.
Try conflict resolution.

BRIDGE: (2x)
I’m going to use my I-Statements
I’m going to use it
I’m going to use it

V3:
I feel…
I feel so sad

When I…
When I’m singing all alone

Because I need…
Because I need community

And could you…
And could you sing with me?

BRIDGE:
I’m going to use my I-Statements
I’m going to use it
I’m going to use it

CHORUS: (x4)
Fighting is not the solution.
Try conflict resolution.

Oh, stand up!
Stand up for my brother
Oh, stand up!
Stand up for my sister
Oh, stand up!
Stand up for each other
Oh stand up!
Oh stand up!

Oh stand up!
Stand up to fight wars no more
Oh stand up!
Stand up whether rich or poor
Oh stand up!
Stand up for each other
Oh stand up!
Oh stand up!

Find a solution
Try conflict resolution (x4)

This song was written to accompany the story of Little Red Riding Hood from the “Big Bad” Wolf’s point of view.

Lyrics

CHORUS
Fighting for what’s right in the world around me,
Improving my community.

Stopping injustice that you and I see
That’s Mosaic in Action.

Stand up assertively!

V1
We’re interconnected,
so, we’re allies to our friends.
We use our empathy to understand them.
We assertively protest,
When we see something wrong.
We walk out
or sit in
or even write a song!

CHORUS
Fighting for what’s right in the world around me
Improving my community!

Stopping injustice that you and I see
That’s being a “Mosaic citizen” to me!

V2
What do you care about
and what are you going to do?

Raise your voice high and follow through
The government’s branches and leaders count on you
You have the tools
and the power to get them to listen to you!

BRIDGE
But it can be hard,
when I look around me
And hurt is what I see
Change isn’t easy
but together
We can see a world of equality!

CHORUS
Fighting for what’s right in the world around me
Improving my community

Stopping injustice that you and I see
That’s “Mosaic in Action” to me!

CHORUS
Fighting for what’s right in the world around me
Improving my community!

Stopping injustice that you and I see
That’s “Mosaic in Action” to me!
